
A phono stage (also called a phono preamplifier or phono preamp) is one of the most important parts of any turntable setup. It is also one of the most misunderstood.
If you have never heard of a phono stage, that might be because yours is hiding inside another piece of gear. Many turntables, receivers, and amplifiers have one built in. But that is not always the case. And even when it is, an upgrade can make a big difference.
We have been helping people build great Hi-Fi systems for over 40 years. In this guide, we will walk you through what a phono stage does, how it works, and whether you need a standalone one.

A turntable cartridge creates a very small electrical signal as the stylus traces the record groove. This signal is too weak and too uneven for your amplifier or speakers to use on their own. A phono stage fixes both problems.
It makes the signal louder. A moving-magnet (MM) cartridge puts out about 2 to 5 millivolts. A moving-coil (MC) cartridge puts out even less — sometimes under half a millivolt. Your amplifier needs a much stronger signal than that. The phono stage boosts it to a level your amp can work with. This is called line level.
It balances the frequencies. When a record is made, the bass is turned down and the treble is turned up. This is done on purpose. It keeps the grooves small enough to fit more music on the record and helps cut down on surface noise. The phono stage reverses this so the music sounds the way it was meant to.

You do not need to know every circuit inside a phono stage to pick a good one. But understanding the main parts can help you figure out which features matter for your setup.
A phono stage connects to your turntable on one end and to your amplifier or receiver on the other. Most use standard RCA connections — the red and white plugs you have probably seen before. Some higher-end models also offer XLR connections for a balanced signal path, which can help reduce noise over longer cable runs.
This is the heart of the phono stage. It is the circuit that reverses the frequency adjustments made during recording (the RIAA curve we mentioned above). A well-designed equalization circuit keeps the correction accurate, so the music sounds natural and true to the original recording.
Most phono stages that support both MM and MC cartridges have a gain switch. MM cartridges need less amplification (typically around 40 dB of gain), while MC cartridges need more (often 60 dB or higher).
This one sounds complicated, but the idea is simple. Your cartridge has certain electrical needs, and the phono stage has to match them. The impedance switch adjusts how the phono stage loads the cartridge. When the match is right, the cartridge performs at its best and the sound stays clean and clear.
Records are not always perfectly flat. Small warps or wobbles can create very low-frequency vibrations that you cannot hear but that still push your woofers back and forth. Over time, this can stress your speakers. A subsonic filter removes these ultra-low signals before they reach your amp.
If you have ever heard a loud hum through your speakers when playing a record, grounding is usually the fix. Turntables are sensitive to electrical noise from your home's power line (60 Hz in the US, 50 Hz in many other countries). A ground wire from your turntable to the phono stage's ground terminal drains away that noise.
The power supply does two jobs: it powers the phono stage's circuits, and it keeps electrical noise from the power line out of your audio signal. Higher-end phono stages often use larger or separate power supplies to do this job even better.
The metal case around a phono stage is not just for looks. It shields the sensitive circuits inside from radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) — the kinds of stray signals that can add noise to your music.
